April Fools' Day Hoaxes

Alabama State changing the value of Pi

The April 1998 issue of the New Mexicans for Science and Reason newsletter contained an article claiming that the Alabama state legislature had voted to change the value of the mathematical constant pi from 3.14159 to the 'Biblical value' of 3.0. Soon the article made its way onto the internet, and then it rapidly spread around the world, forwarded by email. It only became apparent how far the article had spread when the Alabama legislature began receiving hundreds of calls from people protesting the legislation. The original article, which was intended as a parody of legislative attempts to circumscribe the teaching of evolution, was written by physicist Mark Boslough.

Taco Bell buying the Liberty Bell

In 1996, Taco Bell took out a full-page advertisement in The New York Times announcing that they had purchased the Liberty Bell to "reduce the country's debt" and renamed it the "Taco Liberty Bell." Hundreds of outraged citizens called the National Historic Park in Philadelphia where the bell was housed to express their anger. Their nerves were only calmed when Taco Bell revealed, a few hours later, that it was all a practical joke. When asked about the sale, White House press secretary Mike McCurry replied tongue-in-cheek that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold and would henceforth be known as the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial.

 Tower of Pisa falling over

Dutch television news reported in 1960 that the Tower of Pisa had fallen over. Many shocked people contacted the station.

The Guardian switching to Twitter publication

On April 1, 2009, British newspaper The Guardian and the alternative-weekly Mountain Xpress in Asheville, N.C. announced that they were dropping their print editions and would publish exclusively via Twitter. According to the newspaper, all news would be 140 characters long.

 Big Ben becoming digital

In 1980, the BBC reported that the Big Ben, in order to keep up with the times, was going to be given a digital readout. The announcement received a huge response from listeners shocked and angered by the proposed change. The BBC Japanese service also announced that the clock hands would be sold to the first four listeners to contact them. One Japanese seaman in the mid-Atlantic immediately radioed in a bid.

 BK launching a left-handed Whopper

In 1998, Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich. Simultaneously, according to the press release, "many others requested their own 'right handed' version."

 The flying penguins

In 2008, The BBC together with the Telegraph announced that camera crews filming near the Antarctic for its natural history series Miracles of Evolution had captured footage of Adélie penguins taking to the air. It even offered a video clip of these flying penguins, which became one of the most viewed videos on the internet. Presenter Terry Jones explained that, instead of huddling together to endure the Antarctic winter, these penguins took to the air and flew thousands of miles to the rainforests of South America where they "spend the winter basking in the tropical sun." A follow-up video explained how the BBC created the special effects of the flying penguins.

The Eiffel Tower being moved to Euro Disney Park

In 1986 thousands of French citizens were outraged after The Parisien reported that an agreement had been signed to dismantle the Eiffel Tower and have it reconstructed in the Euro Disney theme park. In the space where the Tower used to stand, a 35,000 seat stadium would be built for use during the 1992 Olympic Games.

The stretching surgery of French President Sarkozy

In 2008, the French first couple inspired a spoof for The Sun newspaper, which told how Nicolas Sarkozy was to undergo stretching treatment to add five inches to his height. The technique involved was said to have been developed on guinea pigs by Israeli academic Professor Ura Schmuck, while the paper also quoted French spokesman Luc Bigger, who said Sarkozy would have the treatment at the Poisson d'Avril centre in Geneva.

The eruption of the Great Blue Hill in Massachusetts

In 1980, the Channel 7 news in Boston ended with a special bulletin announcing that a 635-foot hill in Milton, Massachusetts, known as the Great Blue Hill, had erupted, and that lava and ash were raining down on nearby homes. Footage was shown of lava pouring down a hillside. The announcer explained that the eruption had been triggered by a geological chain reaction set off by the recent eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington. An audio tape was played in which President Carter and the Governor of Massachusetts were heard declaring the eruption to be a "serious situation." At the end of the segment, the reporter held up a sign that read "April Fool." However, by that time local authorities had already been flooded with frantic phone calls from Milton residents. One man, believing that his house would soon be engulfed by lava, had carried his sick wife outside in order to escape. The Milton police continued to receive worried phone calls well into the night. Channel 7 was so embarrassed by the panicked reaction that they apologized for the confusion later that night, and Homer Cilley, the executive producer responsible for the prank, was fired.

Unknown boob facts

World's biggest boob job are a size 38KKK

In early 2009, Sheyla Hershey of Brazil was awarded the Guinness World Record for having the largest set of breasts. After nine surgeries and more than a gallon of silicone, her breasts are a size 38KKK.

Norma Stitz, the lady from pic 8, has the world's biggest natural boobs.

There is a ONG that fights for women's right to be topless

GoTopless.org is a US organization which claims that women have the same constitutional right to be bare chested in public places as men. They often promote (topless) gatherings to claim for their rights.

The left breast is usually larger

No two breasts are exactly the same size, and it is usually your left breast that is bigger than the right side. However, often the difference is so slight you'd never notice they are of different sizes. Nipples also come in varying sizes, not only that, they also point in different directions.

Breasts are the first thing men notice in a woman

No news here. Research conducted at the Victoria University of Wellington showed that breasts are often the first thing men look at, and for a longer time than other body parts. Nothing to be ashamed since another study said that staring at women's breasts for just minutes a day can improve a man's health and add four to five years to his life.

 Men can lactate too
It's exceptionally rare, but since men possess mammary glands just like women do, they have the capacity to produce milk. When male lactation happens, it's usually because of hormonal treatments for diseases like cancer.

England is the country with biggest breasts in Europe

A survey made by bra maker Triumph found that British women have the biggest boobs in Europe. More than half of women in that country wear a size D cup. Denmark scored second while Holland was third. On the other hand, Italian women had the smallest breasts where 68 percent had a size B.

The average breast weighs one pound

The average breast weighs about 0.5 kilograms (1.1 lb). Each breast contributes to about 4-5% of the body fat and thus 1% of the total body weight of an average woman.

 Breasts get fat

In your 20s, your boobs are made up of fat, milk glands and collagen -- the connective tissue that keeps them firm. But as you age, the glands and collagen shrink and are replaced by more and more fat. Instead of making your bra size go up, however, the added flab can send breasts down, closer to the floor, if you catch our drift.

Breasts augmentation may lead to suicide

Women who get breast implants are at least three times more likely to commit suicide, a risk that increases with time. As the August 2007 Annals of Plastic Surgery reported, it's unlikely that silicone toxicity causes the correlation. It's more probable that women who undergo breast augmentation are more apt to have an underlying psychiatric problem that predisposes them to suicide.

Breasts implants can also save you from death

Big breasts miraculously saved an Israeli woman from death at the hands of a Lebanese paramilitary organization. The incident occurred during a Hezbollah rocket attack. The victim got a boob job two years ago. During the war, she was wounded in the chest by shrapnel but survived because of her implants. While the patient is fine, the implant, unfortunately, did not survive.

Breasts implants are the number one cosmetic surgery in the US

Two million women in the United States have breast implants. It's number one cosmetic procedure requested by women, topping rhinoplasty and liposuction. The average age at which a woman gets implants is thirty-four.

Unconventional burials

Space Burial: launches a small part of the cremated ashes into space

Space burial is a burial procedure in which a small sample of the cremated ashes of the deceased are placed in a capsule the size of a tube of lipstick and are launched into space using a rocket. The first space burial was launched on April 21, 1997.

Eternal Reefs: creates a reef ball from the ashes of your loved one

A reef ball is a steel sphere. A person's cremated remains are placed inside the reef ball and sealed after which the ball is placed into the ocean, to eventually become part of a living reef. This option replaces cremation urns and ash scattering with a permanent environmental living legacy.

LifeGem: transforms the carbon of human remains into a diamond

LifeGem offers a high-quality diamond created from the
carbon of your loved one as a memorial to their unique life, or as a symbol of your personal and precious bond with another. Whether you've lost a loved one, the LifeGem diamond provides a way to embrace your loved one's memory day by day.

Ecological burial: transforms the corpse into an organic powder

Promessa developes and offers a new method of laying the dead to rest. An environmentally friendly form of burial. The main principle of this ecological form of burial is that the corpse is transformed into an organic, odorless, hygienic powder. This, in combination with a dedicated method to separate contaminants such as mercury, sharply reduces impact on the environment.

Heavens Above Fireworks: incorporates cremation ashes into fireworks

Heavens Above Fireworks modifies a number of unique fireworks to incorporate cremation ashes, allowing for a spectacular memorial event and happier farewell.

Alkaline Hydrolisis: turns the body into a brownish liquid

With this method bodies get dissolved in lye and turned into a brownish, coffee-colored syrupy residue, in what is clearly a very environmentally friendly technique. The liquid has the texture of motor oil and spreads a strong ammonia (urine-like) smell, but it is sterile and can be poured down the drain. At the moment, only two U.S. medical centers (the University of Florida in Gainesville and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota) employ this technique on human bodies.

Carbon Copies: transforms the carbon of human cremains in pencils

This is a 240 pencil set made from the carbon of a cremated human. Each pencil is foil stamped with the name of the deceased. Only one pencil can be removed at a time, it is then sharpened back into the box causing the sharpenings to occupy the space of the used pencils. Over time the pencil box fills with sharpenings - a new ash, transforming it into an urn. The window acts as a timeline, showing you the amount of pencils left as time goes by.

Ashes to Portraits: transforms the ashes of your loved one into a portrait

Using some of your loved one's ashes combined with a very special mixture involving oil paint, the company has a professional artist create a one-of-a-kind portrait that will not only be a beautiful remembrance that will live on for many generations, but it will also help with your feelings of loss.

Bizarre Wedding Dresses

This is a wedding dress made entirely of condoms and was specially designed for the Condom Fashion Show in Beijing, China.

War time is not an excuse for not having a wedding party anymore, with this camouflage dress designed by the artist Erika Sarkozi.

This wasn't a real wedding; actually it was part of a reality show from the British TV where few of the competitors have to stand in full view almost naked in the middle of the city downtown. A very good idea for some of us who don't want to waste time after the wedding night and go straight to the point.

Be careful not to stand next to anything flammable if you want to wear this paper frock.

This is all a classy lady wants on her big day. A little glitz…a little sparkle.

Hello Kitty fans may just fall for this pink wedding frock.

Baker Valentyn Shtefano and his bride Viktoriya show off her wedding gown, which Shtefano made out of flour, eggs, sugar and caramel, in the western Ukrainian city.

The dress — made of 1,500 cream puffs and weighing 20 pounds — took the 28-year-old baker two months to make, and by the end of the wedding reception, bride Viktoriya said she didn't want to take it off.

This lovely bridal gown is absolutely charming. Or should that be Charmin? Far from being a priceless designer number, the dress is made entirely from toilet paper, tape and glue. Its maker, Ann Kagawa Lee of Honolulu, Hawaii, took inspiration from the film "Gone With the Wind" and Japanese Origami.

Yve St Laurent designed a wedding dress based on the Russian matryoshka nesting dolls, the dress is crocheted and looks a little …odd?

If you are contemplating a gothic style wedding then you may have been visualizing a gothic style dress and some heavy eyeshadow. That is exactly what couple Julie Williams, 45, and Dylon Holroyd, 49, did when they had an extreme gothic wedding.

Show your groom you really are the light of his life with this frock by Yumi Katsura.

Chantal Coady and Ian Stuart of Ian Stuart Brides had been talking about creating a chocolate wedding dress for years, and Chocolate Week 2008 seemed the perfect opportunity to combine Ian's distinctive style and Rococo's creative approach to chocolate.
