Top 10 Facts You Didn’t Know About Sperm

We all know what the little guys are for and who’s responsible for making them, but the baby makers are packing a lot more than just the half the DNA package to make a new human being. Here are some surprising facts which are going to make you look at the little fella’s in a completely different light.

10. Fertility at the Speed of Light

Human sperm travels at the staggering rate of up to 4 millimeters per minute, but many are as slow as 1 millimeter per minute. You have to put this into perspective; human sperm are only 55 millionths of a millimeter or 55 microns in length, so a millimeter is a pretty big deal to the mini-me’s.

The average length of the journey to the fallopian tubes is 175 millimeters, which means the Road Runners of the team can get there in 45 minutes, but in practice the journey takes anything up to 3 days.

9. A 25% Shot at the Title

Even a fertile couple with no conception issues and practicing unprotected sex with ejaculation in the female have only a 1–in-4 chance of conceiving. If you wear jockey shorts to keep the meat and two veg neatly packaged, instead of those airy boxer shorts, your chances start dwindling rapidly.

Human reproduction is notoriously fickle and very inefficient; in fact, it’s a wonder any of us got here to begin with.

8. Sperm are Like Men – No Sense of Direction

One of the reasons for sperm taking so long to find the egg is because they have no sense of direction. There are chemical signatures released by the egg to act as a “guide” to the sperm, but have you ever known of a man to take directions from a woman?

Only 1 in 5 sperm will start swimming in the right direction after ejaculation, which accounts for that age old bedroom debate about who will be sleeping in the sticky patch after making love.

7. Your Biological Clock is Ticking – Not Yours, Girls – The Guys!

The biological alarm clock may be ticking for women, but they have a much longer lie in life’s fertility bed than men do; for guys the biological alarm goes off much earlier. Women enter menopause sometime in middle age, but guys start a rapid decline in the quantity and quality of their sperm when they hit the ripe old age of 25!

6. New York vs. Los Angeles

Gangsta rappers may have their West coast/east coast rivalry, but there is one thing there is no dispute over. For reasons no-one understands, New York men have a 50% increased sperm count than guys from Los Angeles. Go Giants!

5. Never Get Stuck in Reverse

Sperm can only swim in one direction – forwards.

4. Size Does Matter

The sperm of a fruit fly can be as long as the body of the male fly, about 1.1 mm. On the other hand, of the vast number of mammals, humans included, have one of the smallest sperm cells, measuring only 40 microns long. Rats produce one of the largest sperm at 170 microns long.

If there was a prize for biggest sperm in nature, it would go to Drosophila bifurca, a tiny fruit fly whose coiled sperm would measure more than 2 inches long if straightened out. That’s 1,000 times longer than an average human sperm. (Source)

“To put that into perspective, if humans made sperm that long and you took a six-foot man and stood him on the goal line of a football field, his sperm would stretch out to the 40-yard line,” said Adam Bjork, a Ph.D. student at Syracuse University in New York.

3. Time to Mature

Sperm take 2 ½ months to grow to maturity in the testes. The question then becomes where are all these little guys hanging out down there? The sperm nursery and warehouse is the epididymis which found on top of the testes.

2. How Come There is Enough Room for All the Little Guys Down There?

The majority of ejaculate is not sperm; sperm only accounts for around 5% of your population juice, with the rest being made up of fluids which contain a combination of nutrients and protective substrate to help the little guys on their way to the egg.

1. Eat Your Veggies

How healthy a man is has a direct bearing on his fertility. Eating fresh fruit and vegetables, avoiding junk food and maintaining a healthy weight, lots of fresh air and exercise, taking vitamin supplements, getting plenty early nights and abstaining from tobacco and alcohol, are all guaranteed to give a man a higher sperm count. Not only will he produce more sperm, but they will be much more energetic and thus more likely to be The One – the only issue with this is your offspring are likely to be very boring

Battle of Verdun

As the battle of the Somme was being planned, the Germans staged a massive attack against the French fortress near the town of Verdun-sur-Meuse. Though the German goal was to capture the town, a much simpler one was even more apparent; simply kill so many French soldiers that it would break the French morale and force them to abandon the fight. The French, though, stubbornly defended Verdun and inflicted horrific casualties on the Germans, while suffering horrific casualties of their own in return. Nearly 40 million artillery shells were exchanged during the battle, pock marking the area with craters, some of which are still visible to this day, and popularized the French battle cry “They shall not pass!”. Verdun came to be for the French and Germans what the Somme was to the British; a symbol of the horrors of war in general, and of the futility of World War I in general. The French lost some 542,000 casualties, while the Germans lost some 435,000.

7 worst places to hit on a gal

Funeral

Sure women dressed in black may be sexy, but remember, this day isn't about you wanting to score, it's about the person in the casket. So take a step back and keep your mouth shut - unless you're offering your condolences.

Job Interview

Keep your priorities straight - you're going in for a job, not for a date. It doesn't matter if your interviewer is so hot you fumble your name, you just need to make sure you get a call back saying you got the job, not to get lost.

Emergency Room

Emergency rooms aren't like bars - people aren't waiting there because they want to. Respect their space and privacy and maybe they won't give you another reason for being at the ER.

Elevator

An elevator is an awkward place to hit on someone, so don't do it. There is certainly not enough time to get out what you say in an articulate manner and cornering some poor soul when she isn't interested is just plain rude and in some cases intimidating. Avoid this spot when making your move.

Gym

Yes, the gym can be full of attractive people, but odds are they're there to actually exercise, not to give you their digits. So leave that cute brunette alone, she's avoiding eye contact for a reason.

Plane

Ever wonder why attractive women who are seated next to you always nap on the flight? They're not exhausted, they simply don't want to talk to you, especially since there's no chance of escape.

Bus

This is another very awkward place to hit on a girl because she can't escape if she so desires without getting off the bus several stops too soon. Here's a tip, if she's wearing headphones, reading a book or nodding off, she doesn't want to be bothered so don't even try

Frestonia

In the late 70s, a small, derelict section of the Notting Hill region of London gained worldwide attention after it declared its independence from the rest of Britain. The community, which called itself Frestonia thanks to its location on Freston road, was made up of squatters and other counterculture types who had been threatened with eviction by the local city council. Unwilling to abandon their lifestyle, the residents banded together, and after voting overwhelmingly to secede, declared themselves a sovereign nation on Halloween night 1977. They quickly applied for induction into the United Nations, and warned that peacekeeping troops would be needed if the council tried to evict them by force. Because of constant media coverage, the city found it difficult to throw the Frestonians out of their neighborhood, and following a public inquiry the micronation was given the right to exist.

The residents jumped at the opportunity to build their own nation, and soon created their own newspaper, postage stamps, national anthem (three of them, actually), and even a film institute that regularly showed concert footage of the Sex Pistols. The area became a counterculture haven, to the point that in 1982 The Clash even came to the community to record their album Combat Rock. Eventually, though, members of the region negotiated an agreement with the city to help in rebuilding the crumbling district. This meant that Frestonia lost its cherished freedom from the British government, and many of the original citizens moved away. The organization of the little country-within-a-country soon collapsed, but even today the neighborhood remains an unusually close-knit community.

6 most scariest places in America

1. The Winchester Mansion
The fabled Winchester Mansion is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the United States. Under construction for 38 years, the owner, Sarah Winchester (of Winchester gun fame) continuously built on the house because she thought it was haunted by the many people who were killed by the rifles. It has doors leading out of the upper levels, stairs that end in ceilings, hallways that shrink as you go down them, and a slew of other creepy features. There are tours offered to this scary local and it is considered to be one of the best Halloween attractions in the United States.

2. Salem Massachusetts
Very few will need to be introduced to this city since it is one of the homes of the famous Salem Witch Trials. The city of Salem itself has capitalized on the fame and notoriety of the trials with a slew of witchcraft stores and attractions, but the historical sites are where the true horror can be seen. The cities of Salem, Ipswich, and Andover all saw trials beginning in 1692, and before it would end, several people would be hung, crushed to death, set on fire, or drowned while trying to expel the black arts from the area. You can still feel the spectral presence of paranoia in the entire area, especially at night. For many, touring the high number of historical sites found around the area will help many find a truly horrifying experience. If nothing else, the number of fun tourist attractions will help make the trip worth wild.

3. LaLaurie House
When it comes to haunted locations, no city in the United States can compete with New Orleans. Home to a number of different spooks and ghouls, this haunted mansion has a history of brutal slavery dating back generations. Madame Lalaurie would treat here slaves viciously, chaining one to the stove in the kitchen to ensure his meals were prepared. Others were killed through cruel treatment and buried in shallow graves on the estate. After a fire broke out in the home, their cruelty became apparent. In the locked attic, firefighters found several slaves, each of which were in a terrible conditions. Some were chained to walls, others were held in cages, some were even secured to operating tables. Along with the whole slaves were random body parts found throughout the attic. While some were dead, others were merely tortured in deliberate fashions to stave off death. When compared to the rest of the French Quarter, this is truly or horrific site.

4. Athens Lunatic Asylum
When it comes to the horrifying and macabre scary places in America, few can compare to the Athens Lunatic Asylum. This location, found in Athens, Ohio, is known to be an established location of paranormal activity believed to be associated with the many actions that took place while the actual asylum was in operation. Included in the horrible things that occurred here are the birth of the lobotomy procedure (where a part of the brain is destroyed to help improve a mental condition), a never-fading stain from an older dead women (the stain has yet to disappear from the spot of her death), and the many insane and mentally unstable Civil War veterans, criminals found to be insane, and others in an insecure metal state who died in the facility. Many of those individuals were also buried in a cemetery found on premises.

5. The Bell Witch Cave
Not too many have heard of the Bell Witch Cave, but those who have can tell it is a very scary place. Located in Adams, Tenn., the Bell Witch Cave is believed to be the final resting place of the fabled Bell Witch, a women who haunted the Bell family over a long period of time, apparently even causing some of their deaths. Included in her stalkings are a number of different events, including clawing and scratches, strange noises through all hours of the night, even illnesses striking, eventually taking some of their lives. Andrew Jackson even considered the event important enough to investigate, leading him to experience the phenomenon itself. The witch, who was apparently a neighbor who had bad business dealings with the family, is believed to have either practiced in this 490 ft. cave, fled here and died when others began investigating, or is still living there, almost 200 years later.

6. Waverly Hills Sanatorium
Located in Louisville, Ky., the Waverly Hills Sanatorium is considered to be one of the most haunted hospitals found in the world. Started as a hospital for those afflicted with tuberculosis, a then incurable disease of the lungs, various, and sometime horrific, treatments were administered on patients. In all, over its years of operation, more than 8,000 people are believed to have died in its walls, either from the treatments or the disease itself. Early estimation were greatly sensationalized, leading to many people speculating that more than 80,000 people had met their end in the hospital. The development of medicines for the disease led to the hospitals closure. Going here now, which tours are provided, a person will experience odd sounds, shadow people walking the halls, doors closing and opening on their own, and a generally horrifying atmosphere, especially in the morgue and the solarium. This place was so bad, even a nurse committed suicide in one of the rooms. A truly scary place to be found in America.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe, one of the world’s most famous icons, was born in Los Angeles on June 1, 1926 by name Norma Jeane Mortenson. No other movie star lived a more glamorous yet tragic life than Ms. Monroe, who died on August 5, 1962 in suspicious circumstances.

Norma Jean spent most of her childhood in foster homes and orphanages until 1937, when she moved in with a family friend Grace McKee Goddard, but when her husband was moved to East Coast they didn’t have enough money to bring Norma with them, so she had two choices: returning to the orphanage or getting married. She got wed with her neighbor Jimmy Dougherty, whom she dated for six months, in 1942. The marriage didn’t last to long. He joined the Marines and got transferred to South Pacific in 1944. After his leaving Norma took a job assembly line at the Radio Plane Munitions factory in California. A photographer David Conovel, while taking photos of women contributing to the war effort for Yank, magazine noticed Norma. He just couldn’t believe his luck. Camera loved Norma. She was every photographer dream, in two years she become a reputable model. In 1946, Jimmy returned and she was again having two choices: marriage or carrier. And as we all well know the choice was carrier, so they got divorced that year. And her carrier was off to go…she signed her first contract with Twenty Century Fox , dyed her hair blond changed her name into Marilyn Monroe ( borrowing her grandmothers last name), and all the rest is a history well known.

There were so many stories written about here but she still remains a great inspiration for everyone. The girl who managed to make an institution of her name is certainly to be respected. Her first appearance in movie was a small role part in “The Shocking Miss Pilgrin”, but her first bigger appearance was in “The asphalt jungle” and so the roles flowed: “ All about Eve”, “ Let’s make it legal”, “Monkey business”, “ Don’t bother to knock”, “Niagara”, “Gentleman prefer blondes”, “How to marry a millionaire”, “The prince and the show girl”, “Someone like it hot”, “The misfits”, “Montgomery Clift” and one left unfinished “Something’s got to give”….

Marilyn was not interesting only for her movies but also her life was a thing witch interested everyone. Her status of a sex symbol was a blessing and ballast for her. About her love life was written and talked a lot. Everyone knows about her marriage with famous baseball player Joe DiMaggio, whom she married in 1956, but it lasted only for few months, since her fame and sexual image became a theme that hunted their marriage. Two years after that she is in marriage again, but now with a famous writer Arthur Miller. At that time there was lot of talking about her relationship with Kennedy, but all remained in pure gossip stories nothing was ever confirmed. At that time she was depressed and took pills and was drinking, witch was not a good thing for her acting, it was almost impossible to work with her, but never the less that didn’t stop her to run off from the shooting (“ Montgomery Clift”) and attend the presidents birthday party and sings her famous: Happy birthday to you Mr. President.

Sadly, in the shocking turn of events on the early morning of August 5, 1962, 36-year old Marilyn was found dead in her home. Apparently she died in her sleep. The world was stunned. Nobody knows how that happened. There are a lot of stories, and even ones about conspiracy theory, the government and her relationship with the president, but I believe that more to be true is that she was a sad woman and that she couldn’t cope with all that popularity…

Prester John

There might be more well known entries on this list, but none of them had the same influence on world politics, religion, or exploration as Prester John, a mythical king who was once believed to have presided over a Christian empire in Asia. His legend dates back to the 12th century, when it arose as an amalgam of adventure stories, true histories of Christian missionaries, and the exploits of Alexander the Great. Prester John and his kingdom became a true sensation in 1165, when a letter supposedly written by him began circulating around Europe. According to these fantastical sources, Prester John was a direct descendant of one of the Three Wise Men. His kingdom, which was suspected to be in India or the Middle East, was seen by the Europeans of the time as a shining light of civilization in a region that was viewed as exotic and barbarous. Prester John himself was believed to be a kind and wise man who ruled over an empire of great wealth, and his kingdom was often said to include such wonders as the Fountain of Youth and even the Garden of Eden. Despite little evidence of his existence, the legend of Prester John persisted for several hundred years, and for a time he was even linked with the Mongol warlord Genghis Khan. It would take until the 1600s before academics and travelers were able to prove that Prester John was nothing but a myth, but in the interim the legendary king had managed to affect everything from religion to world trade. Not only had missionaries stepped up their efforts in Asia and Africa in the hope of discovering Prester John’s kingdom, but explorers like Magellan were encouraged to seek out new lands in the hope that they might one day stumble upon the mythical ruler.
